Well, the comments threat at Hugo's blog got hijacked over the debate over whether women should smile or not at men. Ack! I feel kind rotten about it. I think that there are some massive misunderstandings. (Actually, misunderstanding suits his original topic well, which is why men who mean well can honestly get put off by the "guilt" thing.)

Since the focus in this discussion is often on women's very real anger at sexism and fears of violence, I thought I would point out that women are cautious over men for somewhat mundane reasons, too. My example was men who tell strange women who are lost in their thoughts or even frowning for whatever reason to smile. My point is just this--when a man tells a woman to stop doing whatever she is doing to smile at him, he is essentially saying that her obligation to make men feel good overrules anything else that might be occupying her mind at that moment. I could be wrong--maybe there's the whole smile squad, and all I've ever seen is the male members going after women in public. But I don't think so.

Apparently, this touched a nerve. In a very raw and basic way, one of the most sexist demands on women is that they handle the responsibility of prettifying the world--being cuter, nicer, lifting moods, smiling, handling social niceties, etc. It's hard to criticize this, because it's difficult overall to criticize anything that can be seen generally as a good thing. This is why the issue of women's nuturing nature is a big issue--nuturing is a good thing, so it's difficult for people to see why characterizing women as especially nuturing is wrong. The reason is that this isn't about women being better--it's about tearing down stifling gender roles and achieving equality and freedom. Characterize women as inherently nuturing and women who aren't particularly nuturing will get labeled as bad women.

I think we're off-track to talk about whether women should or shouldn't smile or whether it's dangerous our not, and for one really good reason--it's not about "should". It's about freedom.

I am a really smiley person, a huge goofball. Looking through the mountains of pictures my boyfriend takes, in most I'm smiling even and especially if I don't see that my photo is being taken. Or actually laughing. That's my personality--believe it or not, that too can be considered unfeminine because the proper girlie smile is demure, head down, eyes up adoringly, not a big shit-eating grin. Hell, laughing women might be an even bigger threat than those lost in thought or frowning vaguely at stress in their own lives.

Our behavior doesn't need to be corrected by strangers who have their own opinions about what makes a person sexually appealing, and nor should our very desire to be appealing be up for debate.

So what will fashion followers be wearing en masse in 2012? According to Cleo magazine's fashion director, Aileen Marr, there will be a mix of eras - the 1920s, '30s and '90s all get a nod - and bold colours.

'Ladylike is still strong, after years of short body-con dresses, so women will be wearing Peter Pan collars, lace, shift dresses and kitten heels,' Marr says.

Of course, not all of it will be embraced on these shores. 'The pretty schoolgirl look sounds a bit boring, but Australians will do their own take on it, probably with shorter hemlines and skipping the cardigans for a sleeveless dress to show more skin.'

Spring 2012 Fashion Week in Paris highlighted the schoolgirl look, but where did it originate? British It Girl Alexa Chung had been fashioning her brand of short-skirted teenagerhood for years. The It bag is still a box bag, started by Celine, and in accessories, women are trying to make their wrists look unique with a long mass of individual chains, via friendship or charm bracelets.

What else to look out for in 2012? Stripes, flared pants and black and white are all making some headway. Sportswear is still going strong: think motocross and hip-hop inspired. Alexander Wang used padding, mesh and stripes in his collection, while Karen Walker showed off oversized baseball caps.

High-top sneakers are back, with designers such as Lanvin and Opening Ceremony doing their own bling version.

According to Arthur Galan, who designs clothes for women and men under his label Arthur Galan AG, 'Checks will be very important for men: they will be wearing check coats over check shirts to create a mix of textures. 'The skivvy in those winter months, for the true gentleman's look: to be worn under a jacket or shirt.' Last season's was the remarkable story of the library planet Lagardo, one of the most surrealistic and intellectually sophisticated anime episodes in history. This time around EnJoe - a physicist and novelist of immense intellect and vision - gives us a tale of dimensional reality. It's a collision of universes, from 0-D to 4-D, and all driven by love. It says a lot about what makes Space Dandy" so unique and wonderful that Watanabe reached so far outside the anime mainstream to work with EnJoe, and the results are predictably brilliant.

I don't think it's coincidental that EnJoe's episodes have been the antepenultimate in each season; this season's (and perhaps the series as a whole) final two are going to be written by Satou Dai and Watanabe himself, and last season it was Dai and Ueno Kimiko. Clearly EnJoe is being used to set up the "canon" episodes, and he's certainly in on all the secrets as he drops some very interesting hints in this episode. I was especially intrigued to hear Dandy say "I have about 200 pasts and futures I don't ever wanna remember, Baby" - the surest indication yet that not only is Dandy freely moving between realities (that's a given by now) but that he has a "Reading Steiner" like ability to remember them.

"The stone that starts the ripples in EnJoe's pond is the intrusion of a 2-D universe into - well, not our" universe most likely, but a 3-D universe. Dandy has bad memories of that universe, and he seems unsurprised by the arrival of his old girlfriend Catherine ("Sawashiro Miyuki" - sultry and retrained, one of her best sides) who happens to be a resident of a 4-D universe. Even with Dandy's ability I'm not sure how the mechanics of a relationship between a 3-D humanoid and a hypercube work, but the really strange bit is that the guy Catherine dumped Dandy for is a 2-D Prince named Paul ("Inoue Kazuhiko" - seriously, could this show "get" any more awesome?), and he's the one who crashed his universe into this one searching for Catherine (who dumped "him" after he was named heir to the 2-D throne). How did he do it? He built an inter-dimensional warp drive by putting a 1-D universe in a box.

This is just fabulous stuff that demands to be watched, not explained. Anime doesn't get any smarter or more challenging than this, that's for damn sure, but there's a lot of EnJoe's trademark humor here too - Meow speculation that a universe crashes into another because it's "looking to meet other universes", for example. Whether this is simply a stylistic evolution or represents a genuine change in Dandy's perception of reality I don't know, but the feel of the series is very different. Even Dr. Gel and Bea have evolved into victims rather than adversaries, and it's never easier to pity them than this week - they too seem to retain an awareness of their repeated fate, and a fatalistic resignation that it can't be avoided. I'm nowhere close to guessing how this series is going to end, both because of the sheer breadth of the imagination behind it and the way it's managed to leave every conceivable possibility well, conceivable. These final two episodes are going to be quite a trip.
